THE SHOWER WALLS OF AUSCHWITZ

"In many of my readings about Auschwitz, and in particular about the “showers” used to gas victims, I have come across memoirs written by the people who were tasked with removing the bodies. A recurring, haunting memory recorded by all of them was the vision of some victims who had attempted to literally claw their way through the walls with their fingernails. In their desperation, many had actually left gouges and grooves in the cinder blocks. I have never forgotten that image, or what it must have taken to make it. "
